Ascending Lick to the Octave

Hey Blues Fans!
Here’s a lick that I use to ascend from a minor pentatonic scale to its octave 12 frets above. It’s similar to a lick that Ted Nugent plays in Stranglehold. Though it may appear difficult, it really isn’t. Take your time and build up the speed.

Blues Lick in C

Hey Blues Fans,
This is the same lick found on the “About” page. The “About” page is rarely viewed, so I thought I’d put this in the lesson archives and add the tablature.
This lick is performed in C, but can be moved around the neck to play in any key. The ending note of the lick is on the fourth of the C scale (F), so it’s perfect to play as a lead in to the F9 chord when playing a I-IV-V blues. Enjoy.

Guthrie Govan Blues Lick

Hey Blues Fans!
Perhaps a lot of players use this lick, but I saw Guthrie Govan play it, so that’s why I titled it “Guthrie Govan Blues Lick”. If you are not familiar with Guthrie, he is a MONSTER player. I’m sure the guitar gods would not want to cut heads with this guy. I highly suggest you check out his album Fivesor Erotic Cakes.

You can call this a blues lick or chord embellishment. It comes off the Cm chord (IV chord in G blues). It’s a lot harder than it looks. You need to keep your first finger barred across the third fret, then slide your little finger from the 5th fret up to the 7th and back while letting the B and E strings ring. This lick will definitely help you with your finger stretching and building a callous on your little finger. I promise you, after a few minutes you’re little finger will be hurting…I know mine did.

Have fun.
