Lead-in to the IV chord

Hey Blues Fans,
Here’s a nice lick I like to play that leads into the IV chord. The lick is shown in A, but it’s moveable up and down the neck so you can play it in any key. What makes the lick sound nice is resolving the blue note (b5) down to the IV note before playing the D9 chord. And guess what, you can play the same lick, but resolve the b5 up to the V and play an E9.

As always, have fun

Easy Major Pentatonic Licks

Hey Blues Fans,
Here are four easy major pentatonic licks that sound real tasty. The first three are variations on a theme. The last one is another example of mixing the minor and major pentatonic. These licks sound good when played over an E7 chord.

Have Fun.

Mixing major and minor pentatonic licks

Hey blues fans,
Today’s lesson shows how one can mix licks from both the major and minor pentatonic (or blues scale). Since the fingering of these scales is basically the same, it is simple to go between the two scales and change the feel of feel of the solo. The licks are shown in E, but they can be moved up and down the neck so you can play them in different keys (except for lick 5, which is an E-only turnaround lick).

Take note of how lick 3 ends on the V note (B), which leads nicely in the B9 chord; the same with lick 4, which ends on the IV note (A) and leads nicely into the A9.

As always, have fun.
