Ascending Lick to the Octave

Hey Blues Fans!
Here’s a lick that I use to ascend from a minor pentatonic scale to its octave 12 frets above. It’s similar to a lick that Ted Nugent plays in Stranglehold. Though it may appear difficult, it really isn’t. Take your time and build up the speed.

    Hi,

    Ascending Lick to the Octave

This is a great lick and one of the rare ocasions when we get to the 20th fret.

I have a variation which on my guitar sounds slightly fuller with more sustain.

Are there any technical reasons for doing it one way or the other?

    i.e. instead of

    —————————
    ——17-20-19-17-20^-20^–
    –18———————–
    —————————
    —————————
    —————————

    I play

    ——12-15-14-12-15^-15^–
    –14———————–
    —————————
    —————————
    —————————
    —————————

    Thanks,

    Sysdevman

Whatever sounds good. The only reason I do it my way is because it ends in the Am pentatonic at the 17th fret, which is the octave up from the 5th, hence the name. Variation and experimentation is what it’s all about. Fold, spindle and mutilate these licks all you want.
