Blues Demographics

Hey Blues Fans!
I thought I would share some demographic information from my YouTube channel (Haywyre62). I consistently get about 3000 video views a day, with 1000 of those being unique visitors. Below are the age ranges and the split between male and female. As you can see, most of us blues players are middle-aged males. Even though female blues players are only 11%, that is a 100% increase. Over the last year, females where only 5-6%. Where do you fit in? Comments are welcome.

Unfortunately, I am in the next-to-last group: I’m 62. However, I got hooked when I heard a B.B. King song as a little kid, and I will never lose my love for the blues.
    Keep it going, Haywyre!
Don’t listen to those silly and sometimes nasty criticisms–you make so many people happy with your lessons!

I have one more year in the 45 to 54 percentages but I’ll always be 100% Blues.

I’m afraid most of the people lie about their age on YouTube. I’d say at least 20% of the 45-54 is dispersed between the 13-25′s.

Regardless, thanks for the helpful website. Your Dan solo video was beyond helpful, I’ve struggled with the pedal riffs and finally got them sorted out with your help.

I’ll be 45 in June. I’ve been playing acoustic on and off since I was a kid. I bought my first electric two years ago and as of last week, I already have three electrics: a Strat copy (my first), an Ibanez Jet King II, and my latest, a 2001 Epiphone ES-335 Dot. I just love the Blues and I’m really glad I found your site! You do a great job! Thanks!!

I’m 17 completely into the blues, me and my friend spend our school lunches jamming mostly blues. Lately we have gotten more and more people to start jamming with us.

Thought I’d add to the geographic dispersion of the demographics:)I’m 47, male, living in Mumbai, India.

Used to listen to blues-rock (Lynnrd Skynnrd, Allman Bros, Hendrix, Clapton, Buddy Guy…)a lot since i was 16, but started to play guitar only during the last few years, thanks mainly to online lessons.

Your lessons are really useful and well made. Thank you!

I have loved the blues since the day I saw Muddy on TV (I was 10) Have been playing music since I was 13. But at the age of 38, something happened… I started playing blues for “real” and never looked back. I’m not telling my life story here. just saying that maybe you can’t devote to blues when you’re young?

64 year old male from Sydney, Australia. Mainly played acoustic guitar since 21, including 2 years study of classical guitar. Started playing electric guitar just over 2 years ago and loving it.

    Love your clear simple instructions.

Several years ago, in my late 40′s, I really discovered the blues. Returning to playing guitar, after many years of it sitting in a closet, I began to play more classic rock. While I’d always listened to blues, I didn’t pay a lot of attention to the playing styles. As I began to study some, I also began to realize just how much that classic rock had it’s roots deep in blues. That, of course, led me to learning more and more blues. Now, I’m a fan!

I’m really glad I discovered your site. I find your instructional style very easy to understand. Thanks and keep ‘em comin’!
