Guthrie Govan Blues Lick

Hey Blues Fans!
Perhaps a lot of players use this lick, but I saw Guthrie Govan play it, so that’s why I titled it “Guthrie Govan Blues Lick”. If you are not familiar with Guthrie, he is a MONSTER player. I’m sure the guitar gods would not want to cut heads with this guy. I highly suggest you check out his album Fivesor Erotic Cakes.

You can call this a blues lick or chord embellishment. It comes off the Cm chord (IV chord in G blues). It’s a lot harder than it looks. You need to keep your first finger barred across the third fret, then slide your little finger from the 5th fret up to the 7th and back while letting the B and E strings ring. This lick will definitely help you with your finger stretching and building a callous on your little finger. I promise you, after a few minutes you’re little finger will be hurting…I know mine did.

Have fun.

Ouch! is right. I’m getting it, though. Sounds like this would work nicely in the Allman Brothers version of Stormy Monday Blues.

    Very nice sounding lick.

You could try learning it about 5 frets or so higher then, when you have it down well, move it down the fretboard.

Ouch!….that’s a toughy but great sounding little lick…have to work on those finger stretches….I can get something similar by using ring finger on 5th and doing a hammer pull-off on 7, 5 and 3..not the same tone or smoothness esp that dissonant tone when you slide by the 6th fret and back on the G string

An optional way to play this lick is as follows: – - Hold the 3rd fret, 1st string (G note) with your ring finger
    - With your first finger, slide from the 1st to 3rd fret on the B string (C note to D note), then back from D to C.
    - Then play 3rd fret, 3rd string (Bb note) and quickly pull off to the open G (third string)
